Bologna) About Bologna: The ancient heart of the city beats beneath kilometres of streets lined with stately porticoes, linking mansions, towers, piazzas and monuments. Originally an Etruscan town (“Felsina”), it became a Roman colony in 189 BC The city came under Byzantine rule in the 6th cent. AD and later passed to the papacy. In the early 12th cent. a strong free commune was established. The victory of Bologna over Emperor Frederick II at Fossalta (1249) added political power to the city, then known chiefly as an intellectual center. Bologna's famous university originated (c.1088) with its Roman law school (founded AD 425), where Irnerius and Accursius taught; medical and theological faculties and courses in the liberal arts were added in the 14th cent. In later years those active at the university included Malpighi, Galvani, and Marconi. In current time, Bologna has reached a worldwide reputation about his cuisine: dishes as Tortellini, Lasagne, Tagliatelle, Mortadella, Ragù, and other typical products from the Emilia Romagna Region like Parmesan and Parma Ham characterize the special taste of the bolognese and Italian cuisine . Bologna and his university, which is considered the oldest in the world, are also characterised by a peculiar atmosphere. The great number of students (more than 100.000, in a city of 350.000 inhabitants), coming from all regions in Italy and many also from foreing countries (in Bologna are also located the John Hopkins University and the Brown University), give to the city a charming atmosphere especially in the evening, especially in summer time, when many differents open spaces are crowded by students and common people. In 2003 in Bologna the International Music Museum opened. Some special private collections are now hosted in the Museum, and in the next years new private collections will increase the number of special Musical Instruments which will be available for musicians, students, researchers.
